Boeing After the Gap, Gold's Falling Highs and Oil Back Above $100
Three theoretical setups for Fed day: Boeing, which closed within a dollar of its low after a 10.7% fall on a later cash-flow recovery; gold futures, whose daily highs have stepped down for two weeks into the decision; and WTI crude, back above $101 after a Houthi strike claim on Ras Tanura reversed Tuesday's drop below $100.
BA · The Boeing Company — Neutral, Short-term (days). Boeing fell 10.69% to $168.18 on October 27, its worst day since June 2020, after opening at $183.50 and closing just 77 cents above the session low of $167.41. The report itself was mixed: revenue rose 4% to $24.19 billion and free cash flow was positive at $464 million, but the core loss of $0.34 a share was wider than the $0.21 expected, and the company pushed back its cash-flow recovery, with about $3 billion of free cash flow expected in 2027 against a consensus near $5.5 billion and a 737 rate of 47 a month only from early 2027. A close at the low after a gap on heavy news usually means sellers were still active at the bell, which argues against buying the first bounce; at the same time, the stock has already given back two months of range in a day, and a record $745 billion backlog limits how far analysts are likely to cut their long-term targets. The levels define the next move rather than a view: a daily close below $167.41 would extend the post-earnings move into new territory below last week's range; a close back above $183.50, Tuesday's open, would say the gap was an overreaction and has been absorbed.
XAU/USD · Gold (front-month futures) — Bearish, Short-term (days). Front-month gold futures have made a series of lower daily highs since October 12, from $4,242.30 to $4,224.80, $4,220.40, $4,211.20, $4,174.90 and $4,164.30 on October 22, before the October 23 break to a low of $3,989.10, the first trade below $4,000 since July. Tuesday's 0.9% rebound to $4,074.60 stopped at $4,079.40, and early on Wednesday the contract slipped back to about $4,044. The backdrop is the real-yield squeeze: the 10-year Treasury yield ended Tuesday at 4.995%, just under 5%, the two-year rose to 4.74%, and prediction markets price a December hike at about 73%, so a Fed statement on Wednesday afternoon that keeps the hike on the table would raise the opportunity cost of holding a metal that pays nothing. GLD lost $519 million of assets on Tuesday even as the price rose, according to fund-flow data, which suggests the bounce was not met by new buying. The risks are a softer Fed tone, a weaker dollar, or an escalation in the Gulf that revives demand for havens, such as the Houthi claim of a strike on Ras Tanura late on Tuesday. A daily close above $4,164.30, the October 22 high, would break the sequence of lower highs and invalidate the setup.
WTI · WTI crude oil (front-month futures) — Bullish, Short-term (days). WTI settled at $99.90 on October 27, down 1.8% and below $100 for the first close since October 22, as talks in Tehran between Iran and officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan revived hopes of a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The low of the day, $99.44, stayed well above last week's low of $96.26, and after the close the Houthis claimed a missile strike on Saudi Arabia's Ras Tanura refinery; the front-month contract traded back at about $101.50 early on Wednesday. Supply remains the dominant force: Gulf crude exports are running at about 65% of pre-conflict levels, attacks on tankers near Hormuz have continued, and the Wall Street Journal reported that the United States has told Gulf states to prepare for a possible short military campaign against Iran after the November 3 midterm elections. Since October 16 the contract has traded mostly between $96 and $104, with each dip below $100 bought within a session or two. The setup is a return toward the top of that range while the talks produce statements rather than barrels. The risks are concrete progress in the talks, an OPEC+ surprise or a weak demand signal from the EIA's weekly inventory report on Wednesday. A daily close below $96.26, the October 21 low, would invalidate the setup.
