Citigroup's Earnings Gap, Energy's Second Record, Gains Network's Vertical Day

Three theoretical setups for October 14: Citigroup after a 5.6% earnings-day drop that closed at its low, the energy ETF after two record closes on a day oil fell, and Gains Network after a 93% day on 32 times its usual volume.

C · Citigroup — Bearish, Short-term (days). Citigroup fell 5.60% to $124.53 on October 13 despite beating estimates, and it closed only 9 cents above the day's low of $124.44, at its lowest level since May 19. A results-day drop that ends at the session low usually means sellers were still active into the close, which tends to carry into the next few days. Theoretically, the setup favours further weakness while the stock stays below $129, roughly the midpoint of the October 13 range; a daily close above $129 would invalidate it. Risks: Bank of America and Morgan Stanley report on October 14, and strong results there could lift the whole sector, and buybacks — $3.0 billion last quarter — give the stock steady support.

XLE · Energy Select Sector SPDR — Bullish, Swing (1-4 weeks). XLE closed at a record for a second straight day on October 13, at $67.20, and did it on a day Brent fell 0.90%. Energy shares rising while crude dips is a sign of relative strength, and it comes as money rotates out of semiconductors, which have fallen 7.2% in six sessions. Theoretically, that favours further gains over the next few weeks as long as the rotation continues. The setup is invalidated by a daily close below $65.08, the October 9 close before the breakout. Risks: a sharp fall in oil — Brent slipped back the day after its highest close since mid-September — and a reversal of the rotation if chip stocks rebound strongly.

GNS/USD · Gains Network — Bearish, Short-term (days). GNS rose 93.51% to $0.716 on October 13 on 32 times its average volume, after a peak of $0.858 that was 147% above the morning low. It closed 16.6% below that peak. This month's other single-day spikes on extreme volume have mostly faded the next day: Gitcoin fell 20% and Osmosis 19% on October 13 after jumping on October 12. Theoretically, that favours a pullback toward the $0.47-$0.56 area where GNS consolidated in the US afternoon before its second leg higher. A daily close above $0.858, the day's high, would invalidate the setup. Risks: no clear catalyst has been reported, so a project announcement could extend the move, and thin order books make sudden squeezes possible.
