Energy Knocks on Its September High, Chips Crack Their Range, NEAR Reverses at a 21-Month High
Three theoretical setups for October 9: the energy sector ETF after oil's 4% jump, semiconductors after their worst day since mid-September, and NEAR Protocol after a bearish outside reversal.
XLE · Energy Select Sector SPDR — Bullish, Swing (1-4 weeks). XLE rose 2.97% on October 8 to $65.24, its highest close since September 15, as Brent crude gained 4.07% to $104.28 on tanker attacks around the Strait of Hormuz and hurricane-related shut-ins in the US Gulf of Mexico. The fund is now just 1% below its September 15 close of $65.93, its best close of the past two years, and it has risen on five of the last six sessions. Theoretically, a close above $65.93 would confirm a breakout and favour continuation, while the setup stays valid as long as XLE closes above $64.30, the October 8 low; a daily close below it would invalidate the idea. The main risk is that the oil move rests on events that can reverse quickly: crude already pared its gains after President Trump said the US would not attack Iran before the midterms, and a hurricane's impact on production usually fades within days.
SMH · VanEck Semiconductor ETF — Bearish, Short-term (days). SMH fell 2.84% on October 8 to $607.27, its worst day since September 14, after touching $600.32. Arm (−6.48%), Intel (−5.34%), Micron (−4.79%) and Broadcom (−4.35%) led the decline after a Financial Times report revived doubts about the returns on AI spending, and the move erased the fund's gains since October 1. Theoretically, a break below the late-September consolidation around $605 favours a test of the $600 round number and then the September 24 low of $588.90, while SMH stays below $625.03, the October 7 close; a daily close above that level would invalidate the setup. Chip stocks have recovered quickly from single-day scares several times this year, and the start of the sector's earnings season later this month could change the story in either direction.
NEAR/USD · NEAR Protocol — Bearish, Short-term (days). NEAR touched $5.595 on October 8, its highest price since January 2025, then fell 23% to $4.301 and closed at $4.464, down 16.33% on $303.8 million of volume. With a high above the previous day's high and a close below the previous day's low of $4.868, it was a bearish outside reversal after a near-tripling since early September. Theoretically, failed breakouts at multi-year highs on heavy volume favour a deeper pullback toward the October 8 low of $4.30 and then the September 23-24 lows near $4.03-$4.10, as long as NEAR stays below $5.10; a daily close above that level would invalidate the setup. NEAR had already bounced to about $4.86 early on October 9, and its uptrend since September has been strong, so sharp rebounds are likely even if the reversal holds.
