The Real's Election-Night Rally: USD/BRL Falls 2% in Hours (October 2026)

On October 4, 2026, as Brazil held the first round of its general election, the dollar-real rate fell from 5.29 to 5.18 in a matter of hours. Relive one of the biggest Sunday moves in Binance's USD/BRL market, fifteen minutes at a time.

Brazil voted on Sunday, October 4, 2026, in the first round of its general election. Its currency markets were officially closed for the weekend, but Binance's USDT/BRL pair — which tracks the dollar-real exchange rate against a dollar stablecoin and trades around the clock — remained open, and it became the only live gauge of the real while votes were counted.

For most of the day, the dollar firmed. USD/BRL opened Sunday at 5.2545 and rose through the afternoon, reaching 5.2938 in the 18:00 UTC hour, its highest level in more than three weeks. The pair was still near 5.28 at 21:45 UTC.

Then the direction reversed. In the 22:00 UTC hour — 7 p.m. in Brasília, after polls had closed — the pair fell to 5.2485 within fifteen minutes, and the 22:15 candle traded $25.7 million, by far the busiest fifteen minutes of the weekend. The selling continued in steps: 5.2324 by 22:45, 5.2115 by 23:45, and 5.1829 by 00:30 UTC on Monday. From Sunday's high, the real had strengthened by about 2.1%. Sunday's close of 5.2132, down 0.79% on the day, was the second-weakest Sunday for the pair in Binance data going back to mid-2024.

Watch for the bounce that follows: in the 01:00 and 01:15 candles the pair climbed back to 5.21 before settling around 5.19. That's a reminder that moves made in thin, after-hours markets often get partly revised when liquidity returns. The replay shows the market reacting to election night as it happened. It doesn't tell us what traders were reacting to, and we draw no conclusions about the vote itself. If no presidential candidate wins a first-round majority, Brazil holds a runoff later in October.
