The Sandbox Rises 54% in a Day as Metaverse Tokens Wake Up (October 2026)
On October 2, 2026, The Sandbox's SAND token jumped 27% in one hour and finished the day up 53.8% on about 40 times its usual volume. Relive the surge, the 19% midday shakeout and the late recovery fifteen minutes at a time.
The Sandbox is a blockchain-based virtual world, and SAND was one of the defining tokens of the 2021 metaverse boom. By September 2026 it had become an afterthought: it hit a 2026 low of $0.0325 on September 15 and spent most days trading only $1-2 million on Binance.
October 2 began the same way, with SAND drifting near $0.045 through the Asian night. The first signs of life appeared around 04:00 UTC. Then, in the 07:00 UTC hour, it exploded from $0.0482 to $0.0613 on about $9.6 million of volume — more in one hour than it had traded in the previous five days combined. Decentraland's MANA, Axie Infinity's AXS and Gala jumped in the very same hour, marking it as a sector move rather than a one-off.
SAND climbed in steps through the morning and peaked at $0.0735 in the 12:00 UTC hour, the busiest hour after the initial jump. What followed was a sharp test: by 18:00 UTC price had fallen to $0.0594, a 19% drop from the high. Buyers returned in the late evening and SAND closed at $0.06917, up 53.8%, on roughly $63.5 million of daily volume — its highest close since June 1.
The replay is a useful study in how a breakout behaves on its first day. The initial burst is vertical; the middle of the session hands back a large share of it; and the close reveals whether the move has real buyers behind it. On this occasion it did — early on October 3, SAND went on to reach $0.08396.
