Sei's Post-Launch Decline (Late Summer 2023)

Sei Network's SEI token launched with a chaotic opening spike, then ground roughly 29% lower over the following three weeks as initial listing demand faded.

Sei is a Layer-1 blockchain built specifically to optimize for trading applications, marketing itself as purpose-built infrastructure for decentralized exchanges rather than a general-purpose chain. It launched its SEI token on August 15, 2023.

The opening minutes followed the familiar volatile pattern of a new listing: SEI's earliest trades printed as high as $0.48 against a $0.064 reference price, before settling to a close near $0.179 by the end of the first day.

From that first-day level, SEI ground gradually but persistently lower over the following three weeks, closing near $0.128 by September 3 — a decline of roughly 29%, following the familiar shape covered repeatedly elsewhere in this collection: intense initial demand from traders wanting exposure to a new listing, followed by sustained selling pressure once that initial enthusiasm faded and the token settled into whatever level ongoing usage of the network could actually support.

This pattern — a chaotic opening spike followed by a multi-week grind lower — has shown up often enough across different tokens, different chains, and different years in this replay collection that it's worth treating as close to a base-rate expectation for a new listing, rather than an exception; the specific tokens that instead rally after launch, like Starknet's or Pyth's cases covered elsewhere, are the ones that genuinely deserve a closer look at what made them different.
