The Metaverse Mania Rally: SAND After the Meta Rebrand (November 2021)

Facebook's rebrand to Meta on October 28, 2021 set off a scramble into 'metaverse' tokens. The Sandbox's SAND more than tripled in under three weeks, fueled further by a headline-grabbing Adidas partnership tease.

On October 28, 2021, Facebook announced it was renaming its parent company to Meta, framing the "metaverse" — persistent, interconnected virtual worlds — as the company's next major bet. The announcement immediately reframed a handful of existing crypto tokens built around virtual-world platforms as a newly legitimized category, and capital moved into them fast.

The Sandbox, a blockchain-based virtual world where users buy, build on, and monetize plots of virtual land, saw its SAND token climb from around $2.70 on November 7 to an intraday high of $8.48 on November 25 — a gain of well over 200% in under three weeks. The move accelerated sharply after November 9, when sportswear brand Adidas teased plans to build an "adiVerse" presence inside The Sandbox, giving speculative interest in the metaverse narrative a concrete, mainstream-brand anchor.

The rally is a clean example of a narrative-driven repricing: nothing about The Sandbox's actual product changed in those three weeks, but a single announcement from an unrelated company reframed an entire token category almost overnight. Narrative-driven rallies of this kind can move faster and further than fundamentals alone would justify — and, as SAND's own multi-year chart shows in the months that followed, they can also give back those gains just as quickly once the narrative cools.
