Optimism After the Layer-2 Crash: −8.9%, Then +21% the Next Day (October 2026)
On October 12, 2026, the layer-2 sector unwound and OP fell 8.9%. On October 13 it rose 21.1% to its highest close since May. Replay both days and see how the rebound built without a single big candle.
Layer-2 networks process Ethereum transactions off its main chain, and their tokens tend to move as a group. In early October 2026 the group rallied hard, led by Starknet, which more than doubled in four days.
On October 12 that rally broke. Starknet fell 30.9%, and Arbitrum, Optimism and ZKsync each lost 8-12%. OP fell 8.91% to $0.1309, giving back most of its gains from the previous week.
October 13 brought a different kind of move. OP rose from a low of $0.1259 in the first hour to close at $0.1585, up 21.08% and at its highest level since May 10, on about 2.3 times its usual volume. No hour gained more than about 4.5%: the rise came from steady buying rather than a single burst. It continued into October 14, when OP touched $0.1625. Starknet, the former leader, closed the same day flat.
Use the replay to compare two kinds of rally. A slow, broad climb with no dominant candle often reflects many buyers returning to a theme; a vertical spike usually reflects a few large orders. Ask yourself at which point on October 13 the rebound became convincing enough to act on.
