Optimism's Launch Into a Collapsing Market (June 2022)

Optimism's OP token launched right as the broader crypto market was cratering around Celsius's withdrawal freeze — a brutal debut that saw the token lose nearly three-quarters of its value in under three weeks.

Optimism, one of Ethereum's largest Layer-2 scaling networks (alongside Arbitrum, covered in an earlier replay), launched its OP governance token on June 1, 2022 — timing that turned out to be one of the worst possible windows in recent crypto history, arriving just days before the collapse of the Terra ecosystem's aftershocks gave way to an even sharper crisis.

OP opened trading near $1.44 and spent the following two and a half weeks grinding steadily lower, closing near $0.40 by June 18 — a decline of roughly 72%. The token's fall accelerated sharply in the second week, coinciding almost exactly with Celsius Network's June 12 announcement that it was freezing customer withdrawals, an event covered in an earlier replay that triggered a broad, forced liquidation wave across the entire crypto market.

Disentangling how much of OP's decline was specific to its own token unlock dynamics versus simply being dragged down by a market-wide panic is genuinely difficult — both forces were clearly operating on the same token during the exact same three-week window, and there's no clean way to separate them after the fact.

A new token launch landing during a broader market crisis is a useful reminder that an asset's own fundamentals rarely matter much when the entire market is being sold indiscriminately — timing risk that has nothing to do with a project itself is a real, if often overlooked, category of risk in its own right.
