The November 2021 All-Time High

On November 10, 2021, Bitcoin touched roughly $69,000, its all-time high at the time, driven by hotter-than-expected US inflation data. It marked the top of the 2020-2021 bull cycle, right before a long bear market began.

The rally that carried Bitcoin to its November 2021 all-time high followed over a year of almost uninterrupted growth, supported by pandemic-era monetary stimulus, growing institutional interest, and the October 2021 approval of the first US Bitcoin futures ETF. On November 8, 2021, a hotter-than-expected US inflation (CPI) reading was released, fueling the narrative of Bitcoin as an "inflation hedge."

On November 10, 2021, the price touched roughly $69,000, which remained the all-time high for over three years. Unlike many of the crashes in this replay, there was no single negative event triggering the reversal here: the price simply ran out of upward momentum and began a slow, extended decline that would continue through all of 2022.

Recognizing a cycle top as it forms is among the hardest challenges in trading: unlike a sudden crash, the November 2021 peak had nothing visibly alarming about it at the moment it happened — only in hindsight did it become clear this was the end of a nearly two-year bull cycle.
