NEAR's Failed Breakout: A 21-Month High, Then −23% in Eleven Hours (October 2026)
On October 8, 2026, NEAR Protocol reached $5.595, its highest price since January 2025, then reversed and fell to $4.301 by the evening, closing below the previous day's low. Relive a breakout that lasted about an hour.
NEAR Protocol is a layer-1 blockchain, a base network like Ethereum or Solana, designed to be easy for developers and users. Its token was one of autumn 2026's strongest performers: from $1.89 on September 2 it nearly tripled to $5.39 by September 27, on daily volume that often exceeded $200 million. For the next ten days it moved sideways between roughly $4.55 and $5.55.
The replay opens on October 7, with NEAR pushing toward the top of that range. It rose steadily through the US evening — +2.2% at 16:00 UTC, +2.3% at 18:00 UTC — and reached $5.454 at 20:00 UTC, closing the day at $5.335. Overnight it held above $5.26, and in the 05:00 and 06:00 UTC hours on October 8 buyers pushed again on rising volume, to $5.549.
The breakout came in the 07:00 UTC hour: NEAR touched $5.595, its highest price since January 20, 2025. It closed that same hour at $5.381, down 2.3%, and that was the end of it. The next six hours were a staircase lower, to about $5.00 by the time US markets opened. Then, in the 15:00 UTC hour, as bitcoin and US chip stocks sold off together, NEAR dropped 7.4% to $4.633 on $45.2 million of volume, the heaviest hour of the replay. It hit $4.301 in the 18:00 UTC hour, 23% below the morning peak.
NEAR closed October 8 at $4.464, down 16.33%, on $303.8 million of volume. Its high was above the previous day's high and its close below the previous day's low of $4.868 — a bearish outside reversal. Watch the speed of the failure: a breakout that can't hold for even one hourly close, at a level not seen in 21 months, is telling you that sellers were waiting there. Early on October 9, NEAR bounced back to about $4.86.
