The Dogecoin Mania and Saturday Night Live (May 2021)
On May 8, 2021, Elon Musk hosted the comedy show Saturday Night Live, repeatedly joking about Dogecoin. Instead of the explosive rally many retail traders expected, the price dropped sharply during and after the episode — a classic case of unmet expectations.
Dogecoin, created in 2013 as a lighthearted parody of Bitcoin based on a Shiba Inu dog meme, had become by spring 2021 one of the most talked-about assets in the crypto market, fueled by an extremely active social media community and a string of Elon Musk tweets that had stoked enthusiasm for months. The price had climbed from fractions of a cent to several cents, a gain of thousands of percentage points.
When Musk announced he would host Saturday Night Live on May 8, 2021, much of the Dogecoin community expected a defining endorsement that would push the price to new highs — some openly talked about a $1 target. During the broadcast, Musk instead made several self-deprecating jokes, calling Dogecoin "a hustle" (a term that can mean either "a clever venture" or "a scam," depending on context).
Dogecoin's price dropped sharply during and immediately after the broadcast, losing a significant portion of its value within a few hours, as traders who had bought in anticipation of an even stronger endorsement found themselves disappointed. The episode is a textbook example of how the price of an asset driven almost entirely by sentiment can move erratically when the reality of an anticipated event doesn't quite match the narrative the market had built up in advance.
