Arbitrum's Airdrop Launch and Its Sell-the-News Slide (March 2023)

Arbitrum's ARB token launched via one of crypto's largest airdrops on March 23, 2023, with chaotic first-minute price discovery — then spent the following two weeks grinding lower as early recipients sold.

Arbitrum, one of Ethereum's largest Layer-2 scaling networks, launched its ARB governance token on March 23, 2023, distributing roughly 1.16 billion tokens for free to wallets that had used the network before a set eligibility date — one of the largest airdrops in crypto history by both recipient count and dollar value.

Trading opened in genuinely chaotic fashion: within the first 15 minutes on Binance, ARB traded across a range from $0.50 to $1.60 as buy and sell orders from hundreds of thousands of new token holders hit the market simultaneously with almost no established price to anchor to. The token settled into a rough $1.20-$1.50 range within the first few hours.

From there, ARB spent the following one to two weeks grinding lower, touching a low near $1.10-$1.13 by early April — a roughly 25-30% decline from its first-day range as a meaningful share of airdrop recipients, who received the tokens for free with zero cost basis, chose to sell into the initial demand rather than hold.

The pattern is a common one for large airdrops: the launch itself generates intense initial demand from traders wanting exposure, but a free distribution to a very large number of wallets also creates an unusually large pool of holders with no price anchor and no reason not to sell, and that supply overhang tends to weigh on price for days or weeks after the initial launch-day volatility settles.
