Stacks Has More Than Tripled Since Mid-August. Wednesday Showed the Cost of Chasing It
STX touched $0.4142 on October 1, about 3.4 times its August 18 close, then gave back the entire 11% intraday gain before the day was out.
Stacks, the network that adds smart-contract functionality on top of bitcoin, has been one of the quieter big movers of the past six weeks. Its STX token closed at $0.1200 on August 18. It then rose in steps: a burst to about $0.29 in late August, a September range between roughly $0.24 and $0.29, a push to around $0.35 on September 21-22, and a 17% jump on September 30 to $0.3719, on about $8 million of volume — several times a typical September day.
October 1 started as a continuation. From an open of $0.3716, STX climbed through the Asian session and reached $0.4142 in the 06:00 UTC hour, 11.5% above the open and roughly 3.45 times the August 18 close. That was the top. The token slid through the European morning, spent the US session between about $0.37 and $0.39, and closed at $0.3739, up only 0.6%.
The daily candle that resulted is nearly all upper wick, and anyone who bought during the morning strength finished the day 4-10% down. That is not a verdict on the trend: the higher lows since August are intact, and STX was trading near $0.377 early on October 2. But it is a clear reminder of how a vertical chart treats late arrivals. Thin liquidity cuts both ways — the same modest volumes that let STX triple can erase an 11% intraday gain in a few hours.
