Q3 2026 Scorecard: Bitcoin +43%, Ether +71%, and Three Coins That More Than Tripled

The third quarter closed on September 30 with bitcoin up about 43% and a handful of altcoins up more than 200%. The numbers, and what they leave out.

The third quarter of 2026 ended on Wednesday, and for crypto it was one of the stronger quarters in recent memory. Bitcoin opened July at $58,625 and closed September at $83,624, a gain of about 42.6%, with a quarterly high of $87,396 set in September. Ether did better, rising from $1,572 to $2,686, about 70.9%. Most of both gains came in July and August; September added a comparatively modest 6.4% for bitcoin and 8.8% for ether.

The leaders were well ahead of either. Ethena rose about 266% over the quarter, from roughly $0.072 to $0.265. Zcash rose about 260%, to $1,438, and Uniswap about 220%, to $8.88. NEAR Protocol nearly tripled, up about 200%. Further down, Chainlink roughly doubled (+99.5%), Aave added 87% and Solana 60%. At the other end, Tron gained just 7% and tokenized gold, via PAX Gold, about 4%.

Two caveats belong next to every one of those figures. First, a quarterly return is a measurement between two arbitrary dates, and it hides the path. Zcash's 260% gain includes a peak near $1,698 on September 26 and a 15% slide in the quarter's final four days; Uniswap closed the quarter about 19% below its September 23 high of $10.94. Second, the biggest percentage winners started from the lowest bases. A coin that falls 70% and then triples is still below where it was before the fall, and several of this quarter's leaders were recovering ground rather than breaking new records.

What the scorecard does capture is breadth. It was not a quarter carried by bitcoin alone, or by one hot sector; DeFi tokens, privacy coins, layer-1s and layer-2s all appear near the top. Broad participation like that is generally read as a healthier sign than a rally concentrated in a few names — and also as a reminder that when a whole market rises together, it can fall together just as easily.
