Oil Finally Breaks Its Range, Three Days After the Data That Didn't

The mixed supply report from earlier this week left crude stuck in its pre-data range. Three sessions later, price finally picked a direction.

Crude spent the three trading sessions following this week's ambiguous inventory report essentially going nowhere, oscillating inside the same range it had been consolidating in before the data — a fairly literal illustration of a mixed report failing to resolve anything.

That range finally broke this session, with price pushing convincingly above the upper boundary it had respected for the better part of two weeks. The move came without a fresh headline catalyst, which is itself informative: sometimes a range breaks not because of new information but because the balance of buyers and sellers that had been holding it in place simply shifts.

A breakout with no clean news trigger behind it is worth treating cautiously rather than chasing outright — testing how a position in an oil-tracking asset would have performed through both the range and the breakout is available on Trade2Spike without needing to have called the exact moment it happened.
