Moonriver Ran First. On Saturday, Moonbeam Took the Baton With a 45% Day
GLMR jumped 45% on October 3 to its highest close since May, a day after its sister token MOVR fell 35% from a fivefold run. Two tokens from one ecosystem, moving in relay.
Moonbeam and Moonriver are siblings. Both are Ethereum-compatible smart-contract networks built by the same team: Moonriver launched on Kusama, Polkadot's experimental 'canary' network, in 2021, and Moonbeam followed on Polkadot itself in early 2022. Their tokens, MOVR and GLMR, had spent most of 2026 sliding. MOVR touched $0.622 on August 27 and GLMR $0.005344 on September 16, both their lowest prices of the year.
Moonriver moved first, and violently. MOVR closed at $0.904 on September 24, gained 30% on September 29, 74% on September 30 and another 33.5% on October 1, peaking at $3.34 in the 16:00 UTC hour. That was more than five times its August low, on $96.7 million of Binance volume on October 1 — its busiest day since November 2024. Then the floor gave way: on October 2 MOVR fell 35.1% to $1.885, its worst daily drop since it began trading on Binance in November 2021.
Saturday was Moonbeam's turn. GLMR spent the Asian night near $0.0085 on almost no volume, began climbing around 06:00 UTC, and accelerated through the late morning: the 11:00 and 12:00 UTC hours alone traded more than $4 million as price went from $0.0105 to $0.0134. After a dip to $0.01135 in mid-afternoon, a second push in the 18:00 UTC hour reached $0.014355, 66% above the day's open. GLMR closed at $0.012555, up 45.1%, on $13 million of volume — about eight times its 30-day average and the most since April. It was the token's highest close since May 26.
A relay like this is common when a theme catches on: traders who missed the first token rotate into the closest relative. The catch is that the second leg usually starts with less fuel than the first, and the first leg has just shown how quickly gains can reverse. MOVR is still down about 43% from its peak despite a quiet October 3. GLMR, for its part, closed 2025 at $0.0231, so even after more than doubling since mid-September it remains roughly 46% lower on the year. Early on October 4 it was trading near $0.0133.
